Richard L. "Dick" Davenport, age 78, of Yankton , SD died peacefully Thursday morning, October 1, 2015 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Richard had been living with heart disease for 30 years. Memorial services will be 2:30 pm, Monday, October 5, 2015 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton, SD with Rev. Michael Carlson officiating. Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Richard was born September 18th, 1937 in Yankton, South Dakota, son of John Pleasant and Ruth Emma (Kelly) Davenport. He graduated from Yankton High School in 1956. Richard married Dorothy O'Connor on June 17, 1958 in Garryowen, South Dakota. Both Richard and Dorothy worked at HSC. After 25 years, Richard pursued his dream and opened Yankton Film Service where he not only developed pictures but also took photos in his studio. After Richard retired, he continued his love for photography. He always lived life to the fullest. Richard loved spending time with his grandchildren and when he was able, attending their activities. Richard absolutely loved playing cards. Especially later, poker. When he was feeling well, he wouldn't miss a game come rain or shine. Most of all, Richard loved a good conversation. He could visit and tell stories as long as he had an audience. In addition, Richard had belonged to Alcoholics Anonymous and had enjoyed sobriety for 51 years.
Richard is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Yankton SD; son, Jim (Chris) Davenport of Yankton SD; daughter, Debbie (Stacey) Kutil of Hartford SD; daughter, Lori (Richard) Kalin of Hartington NE; grandchildren: Mason Kalin, Yankton SD, Emily Kalin of Kansas City MS, Krista Kutil of Sioux Falls SD, Melissa Kutil of Vermillion SD, Micah Davenport of Yankton SD, and Connor Davenport of Yankton SD.
Preceded in death are his mother, father, brothers, Leo and Darrell and sisters, Pearl, Delores and Vera.
