Elmer Streyle, age 92 of Menno passed away Monday, March 17, 2014 at the Menno-Olivet Care Center, Menno, SD. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Friday, March 21, 2014 at the Zion Reformed Church, Menno with Rev. Travis Grassmid officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Reformed-Kassel Cemetery, rural Menno with Military graveside rites by the Rames-Bender American Legion Post #152, Menno. Visitations will be from 5-7 PM, Thursday, March 20, 2014 with the family present at the Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel, Menno. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers are Jarvis Heckenlaible, Lonnie Schultz, Terry Auch, Paul Vehle, Bill Vehle and Milo Schaeffer.
Elmer was born October 21, 1921 north of Menno to Ferdinand and Ida (Koerner) Streyle. Elmer was baptized and confirmed and a lifelong member of Zion Reformed Church. He attended eight years of school at rural Huber School. After school, he farmed with his father until entering the U.S. Army on September 8, 1942 during WWII. While in the service, he was in the Pacific Theater, stationed in the New Hebridies, Guadacanal, Treasury Islands, New Guinea, Philippines and Japan for 31 months. Elmer was honorably discharged on January 2, 1946. After the service, he returned to farming, Elmer was united in marriage to Leona (Eileen) Oswald on September 14, 1950. Together they farmed until moving to Menno and he still enjoyed going to the farm to drive tractor. Over the years Elmer enjoyed restoring two antique John Deere tractors, of which he still owns. On February 19, 2013, he entered the Menno-Olivet Care Center until he passed away.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Leona (Eileen) of Menno, SD; son, Gordon of Freeman, SD; daughter, Bonnie of Freeman, SD; brother, Elton (Joyce) Streyle of Scottsbluff, NE; sisters, Lorine (George) Birger of Tucson, AZ and Shirley (Laverne) Vehle of Sioux Falls, SD; aunt, Ada Koerner of Bridgewater, SD; in-laws; nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Melvin, Leroy, and Ray Streyle, sisters: Olivia and Lucille Streyle, Linda Heckenlaible, and Elda Schaeffer, and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.
