Donald Herrboldt, age 85 of Menno, SD passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at the Freeman Community Hospital, Freeman, SD. Funeral services will be 2:30 PM, Saturday, December 20, 2014 at Salem Reformed Church, Menno with Rev. Michael Hecht officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by the Rames-Bender American Legion Post #152 and the South Dakota Army National Guard Honor Guard. Visitations will begin at 4:00 PM on Friday, December 19, 2014 at the Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel, Menno with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Donald Herrboldt was born March 2, 1929 to Henry and Lydia (Knodel) Herrboldt in rural Menno. Don was baptized on April 26, 1929 by Rev. Bodeuman and confirmed June 20, 1943 by Rev. Kaempchen. He was a member of the Salem Reformed Church all his life and served as an elder for 6 years. He also served on the lumber yard and school boards. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War. Don was in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 stationed at the air base in England. Don married Frances Tiede on September 24, 1953 in Parkston by Rev. Koelher. Don took over the family farm in 1959 and purchased the farm in 1964. Don and Frances moved to a home in Menno in January of 1993 and moved to the Salem Mennonite Home in September 2014.
Don is survived by his wife, Frances of 61 years; children: Cynthia (Gary) Loerts of Worthington, MN and their children, Stacy Walters and Hope Loerts; Debra (Jim) Christensen of Freeman, SD and their children: Michelle (Brian) Lueders, Sheila (Matt) Rigo and Tammy (Josh) Hofer; Brenda (Barry) Mettler of Menno, SD and their children, Andy Kanengieter and Aaron Kanengieter; Mary (James) Mettler of Menno, SD and their children, Reid Johnson and Macon Oplinger and Brian (Cindy) Herrboldt of Menno, SD and their children: Austin (Michelle), Abby and Ajay; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Alice Kost and Cleva (Norb) Wenzel; sister-in-law, Gladys Friedrich and a host of relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Gerty Aman; brother, Willard Herrboldt; sister-in-law, Elsie Herrboldt; brothers-in-law, Lawrence Hogrefe, Edmund Kost, Oliver Aman, and Marvin Friedrich; grandsons, Derrick Loerts and Adam Herrboldt and son-in-law, Craig Walters.
