Obituary of David William Vollmer
VOLLMER DAVID
David W. Vollmer, age 77 of Springfield, SD passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home, Viborg, SD.
David was born on June 19, 1941 in Washington, DC to John (Woody) and Bernetta (Nelson) Vollmer. He grew up in Yankton, attended Sacred Heart Grade School, serving as altar boy under Monsignor Reilly and was a shoe shine boy in grandpa Bill’s barbershop. He graduated from Yankton High School in 1959 and entered the Army in October, spending 32 months in Germany. After his discharge from the Army, Dave enrolled at Yankton College and married Cynthia Goeden in April 1963. They moved to Denver for a year. They returned to Yankton where he continued his education at Yankton College, graduating Cum Laude in 1975. David’s 31 years of mail service began as a clerk in Yankton in 1965. He was promoted as Utica Postmaster and later served as postmaster for 21 years in Springfield and retiring January 3, 1997. After retirement, he found another passion, teaching ESL for 9 years at Mike Durfee State Prison. During his postal career, Dave and Cyndi owned and operated the home store in Tabor and the Sandbar Marina in Springfield.
He was a blue jean and sweatshirt kind of guy when not working. He pursued many activities whole heartedly and instilled that enthusiasm in his kids and grandkids. His love of music, poetry, snow skiing, fishing, and taekwondo topped the list. His whistling not so much. He will be remembered by many as the midnight cowboy.
David is survived by his wife, Cynthia of 55 years; children: Lisa (Tom) Winckler, Bill, Teri (Mike) McKee and Kristopher; grandchildren: Matt and Jackie, Kaley, Michael, Dana, Kara and Zach, MyKenna, Zach, Princeton and Brianna; great-grandchildren: Gavin and Madison and baby More in January 2019; bonus grandkids: Kaitlyn, Chelsea, Jared, Nathan & Tim; bonus great-grandchild, Cash; Sisters and brothers: Jim & Mary Sue Vollmer, Debbie & Tom Andera, Andrea & Dwayne Plautz, Tom and Natalie Vollmer and many nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and his beloved pets.
