Obituary of Lloyd Haarberg
Lloyd was born on March 25,1925 in Yankton SD to Chris and Agnes (Hanson) Haarberg. He was raised in Mission Hill where he began his lifelong affiliation with Vangen Lutheran Church, including his baptism and confirmation. Among his boyhood memories were his milk route, swimming in the park and visiting the family farm north of town. He attended Mission Hill High School and graduated from Gayville High School in 1943. Lloyd was a good athlete and lettered in many sports with his favorite being basketball. After high school, he served in the US Navy Airforce (1944-1946) where he was a radioman/gunner. His admiration for his country was later demonstrated by taking a turn as the Commander of the Gayville American Legion. The GI Bill allowed him to attend USD for one year before completing his college degree from Yankton College.
On October 14, 1951 he married Luella Hauck, and to this union three children were born. Over the years Lloyd sold insurance, drove truck, kept the books for John Frick and Sons, and had many entrepreneurial endeavors. However, most people will remember him as the Postmaster of Mission Hill, a position he had for many years until his retirement in 1988. Retirement was filled with many travels with Luella until a rare disease made that impossible. Luella passed away in 2007 and Lloyd filled his final years with reading, crossword puzzles, playing the piano and watching NCAA basketball. We are sure he is watching March Madness from above.
Lloyd is survived by three children and their spouses: Kevin (Lorie) Haarberg of Woodland CA, Kim (Laurie) Haarberg of Littleton CO, and Kendra (Brian) Bunkers of Columbus, NE; grandchildren: Kyle Bunkers, Katie (Dylan) Bunkers Beller, Jake Haarberg, Megan Haarberg and a special "great-grandchild", Kayla Balchitis; and one sister, Lois (Ray) Vaala of the Twin Cities area.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Luella and two older siblings, Luverne and Phyllis, both of whom died in childhood.
Lloyd was a kind, warm, and humble gentleman who positively touched countless lives and will be missed by many, especially his loving family.
Pallbearers will be: Kyle Bunkers, Katie Bunkers Beller, Jake Haarberg, Megan Haarberg, Dylan Beller and Jeff Vaala. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Don Frasch, Milo Hauck, Conley Stanage, Mark Nelson, Duane Wittmeier, and Mick Harriman.
