Daniel J. Gill Sr., age 76 of Yankton, SD passed away at his home on October 11, 2016. Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, SD with Rev. Larry Regynski officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, SD with Military Graveside Rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791 Honor Guard and the SDANGHG. Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Monday, October 17, 2016 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, SD with a rosary at 6:30 PM followed by a Scripture service at 6:45 PM. Daniel was born November 5, 1939 in Yankton, SD to James and Ann (Hunhoff) Gill. He joined the Army in 1957 and was honorably discharged in 1963 and retired from the National Guard after 15 years. He married Janice Learing on November 30, 1963 in Yankton, SD. Daniel was employed at M-Tron for 10 years. He also worked at Vanderhules and a truck driver for Alumax. One of his greatest joys outside of his children and grand-children, was being able to drive truck with his brother at Alumax. Daniel was the American Legion Commander for two years and an usher for Sacred Heart Church. He also volunteered for the DAV for 7 years.
Daniel is survived by his wife, Janice Gill of Yankton, SD; sons, Joe (Laura) Gill of Yankton, SD and Dan (Tara) Gill of Yankton, SD; daughters, Lisa (Tom) Papstein of Yankton, SD and Susie (Kurt – fiance’) Gill of Sioux Falls, SD and 10 grandchildren: Fauna Papstein, Kelli Gill, Zack Haas, Ben Papstein, Dani Gill, Olivia Hudson, Aurora Papstein, Grant Gill, Dale Schiffern and Jazzy Gill.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Jerry and Jim; sister, Cleo Smith and nephews, Frank Smith and Kenny Harts.
