Alvin (Al) Carl Zimmerman, age 90, of Crofton passed away unexpectedly at his home Wednesday, June 11th, 2014. Memorial Services will be at 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 14th, 2014 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton, SD with Rev. Dani Jo Ninke officiating. Burial of Alvin's cremated remains will be in Beaver View Cemetery, Crofton. Visitations will be 5-7 PM, Friday, June 13, 2014 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with the family present. Visitations will resume at 1:00 PM on Saturday at the funeral home.
Alvin was born to Otto and Alma (Von Seggren) Zimmerman on October 21, 1923 in Crofton, NE. He attended school in the Weigand School District. Alvin farmed his entire life in the Bloomfield/Crofton area until retiring in 1994. On January 10, 1942, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Eckmann and to this union four sons were born: Dennis, Galen, Kieth, and Mike. As a young man, Alvin played many games of baseball and his love for baseball continued into being a fan of the Minnesota Twins and was also an avid Nebraska Cornhuskers football fan. On May 23, 1974, he married Mildred (Abelson) Drotzmann at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton, SD. He was an avid hunter of deer and geese but his passion was always fishing. He made over 30 fishing trips to Canada before settling at the fishing cabin at West Whitlock in Gettysburg, SD. He was so fond of one area he fished with great success, it soon became known as Al's Point.
Those who will cherish his memory are his wife, Mildred of Crofton, NE; sons: Dennis (Jeannie) Zimmerman of Bridgeport, KS; Galen (Janet) Zimmerman of Crofton, NE, Kieth (Renee) Zimmerman of Crofton, NE, and Mike (Sharon) Zimmerman of Crofton, NE; step-sons: Steve (Lori) Drotzmann of Yankton, SD, Paul (DeDe) Drotzmann of Lincoln, NE, Mike (Alverna) Drotzmann of Phoenix, AZ, Doug (Lauralie) Drotzmann of Sedona, AZ, Richard (Christine) Drotzmann of Mesa, AZ, and Tom (Diana) Drotzmann of Phoenix, AZ; 11 grandchildren; 17 step grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 11 step great grandchildren; sister in law, Helen Zimmerman of Sioux City, IA and many nieces and nephews.
Alvin was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn on September 17, 1971, his parents, Otto and Alma, three brothers, Robert "Bud" Zimmerman, Merle and Lona Zimmerman and Marvin (infant), and step grandson, Bobby Drotzmann.
