Gerald J. Haas, age 87 of Yankton passed away on early Tuesday morning, July 22, 2014 at the Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM, Friday, July 25, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791 Honor Guard, Yankton. Visitations will begin at 5 PM, Thursday, July 24, 2014 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with a 7 PM rosary followed by a 7:30 PM Scripture service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Gerald, son of Charles and Elizabeth Haas, was born March 28, 1927 in Yankton, SD. Gerald attended school in Yankton before enlisting in the Army. Gerald served in WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was also a long time National Guard member, life time member of the VFW Post 791, and the Yankton Moose Lodge. Gerald was proud of his time spent serving his county.
Gerald married Doris Jean Brandt on April 7, 1953 and to this union, five children were born: Gloria, Robert, Daniel, Tim and Geri.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Doris; children: Gloria (Steve) Lacey, Robert (Deb) Haas, Daniel (Della) Haas, Tim (Nancy) Haas and Geri (Tom) Delaney; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Wilma (Muhmel) Haas, two brothers, Ralph and Leonard Haas, and one sister, Delores Spomer.
