I'll miss Dena's laugh and the way she'd wink when she was talking - nobody winks anymore! I loved the way she loved Daisy, and made everyone feel special, but especially children.

Dena was a ray of sunshine. Her laugh was contagious. She had a beautiful soul. She dated my Dad for a while and we were always up to something fun. One of my favorite memories was trick or treating with Dena & her family. We laughed so much our tummies hurt. Our last chat was a few weeks after I had my son, earlier this year. She always sent the sweetest messages - even years down the road when our paths no longer really crossed, she was still there.
You are missed. Rest easy beautiful Friend. Xoxo.

I am still at a loss of words. Our last conversation was mostly excitement of you telling me you recently had your eyebrows microbladed and how is was such a "game changer." Same old Dena! We talked about getting together, needing some beach time, and having more spontaneous "Come as you are Sunday breakfasts." All upbeat, happy thoughts.
The end of the conversation was a repeat of your desire to escape Yankton, and the struggles you had with being able to say no. I thought it was an easy dream to achieve, even after you expressed again how impossible it would be and never be permitted. I didn't read between the lines and didn't realize how strong your need to escape would become.
Memories of you will always include how much my face hurt for days after an evening, or Sunday Funday with you full of so much laughter.
I will never understand, but I do accept that you believed this was your only escape. I love you, as always!

I’m so sad to be writing this. I remember the first time I met Dena when she started doing nails at the Bee Hive. She was booked up but was absolutely going to fit me in and make sure I had sparkling nails and a spray tan for an upcoming wedding. Dena was one of those rare people you meet for the first time and it seems like you have been friends forever. I loved that about her. I looked so forward to my nail appointments, not just for the awesome job she did; it was about the company, friendship, laughs and hugs. I’m glad to have known her. She always brightened my day. I hear birds chirping and see cardinals in my yard and hope it is a sign that she is ok and where she wants to be. Love and miss you, Dena!

Dena Mae Heeney was a caring, fun-loving person. She was so happy when she lived in Sioux City and then again in Brookings. Despite health struggles in childhood and battling cancer in adulthood, she was always so strong and kept smiling. Dena was a bright light in this world. Many people considered her a true friend.
Dena loved her niece and nephews so very much. She was always the “cool aunt.” She drove a bright red Mustang and listened to the best music. We jammed out to bangers like Quad City DJ’s, Girl Talk, and Ludacris. She taught me to confidently dance like nobody was watching. On Christmas, she spoiled us with mind blowing gifts like bikes and iPads. My favorite memories of Dena were our times working out together at the gym, eating cereal while watching “FRIENDS,” and lounging on the beach. She was bold, loud, and beautiful!
Dena deserved so much better. She had numerous aspirations but doubted her ability to escape her current situation in Yankton. Dena should not be defined by her tragic death but rather by her incredible life.
You loved fiercely and were loyal to a fault, Dena. I sincerely hope that you are finally at peace. Sending thoughts and love to you, Dena. May all of these services be focused on you and shine a light on the amazing person you were. I love you!
