PETERKA JOSEPHINE

Josephine Janda Peterka was born March 12, 1913 to John E and Frances (Hale) Janda. She grew up in the Lakeport Community, Yankton County.  She attended Lakeport School where she graduated from the 8th grade, then attended Tabor High School.  Josephine married Fred A. Peterka  on February 14, 1939 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and to this union were born:  lllraye, Curt and Phyllis.  She was a lifetime resident of Yankton, SD.  Before she and Fred were married, she worked at the Yankton State Hospital as an aide and did housecleaning.  She primarily was a homemaker, taking in ironing as well as raising her family.  After her children were in school, she did volunteer work at Sister James Nursing Home and Sacred Heart Hospital, as well as the Senior Citizen's Center.  She was employed at Gurneys Seed and Nursery in the mailing department, Raynie's Bakery, Council Oak Grocery Store and the food service at Mount Marty College and Yankton College.  After her husband passed away, she worked at Hardees as a hostess and assistant in the kitchen.  Her last employment was at Burger King as a hostess.

Josephine was a loving and caring Mother.  She enjoyed life and many good times with her family and friends.  She also enjoyed square dancing, working with her flowers and her vegetable garden.  

Thankful for sharing her life are her children:  lllraye (Duane) McDonald, Curt (Iris) Peterka and Phyllis (Richard) Yeager, all of Yankton, SD; eight grandchildren: Jeff (Ann) McDonald of Tea, SD, Michelle (Shawn) Boese, of Yankton, SD, Jason McDonald of Denver, CO, Chris (Kristi) Peterka of Yankton, SD, Eric Peterka of Tea, SD, Cody (Sarah) Peterka of Sturgis, SD, Lindsey (Landrey, deceased) Leonard of Yankton, SD and Ellie Yeager of Sioux Falls, SD; as well as 12 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Josephine was preceeded in death by her parents; husband, Fred, in 1990; grandson, Ryan Peterka; brothers, Emil (Leona) Janda and Joseph (Louella) Janda and sisters, Mamie Janda and Lillian (Lyle) Broderson.
