Jim married the love of his life, Janell Becker on July 8, 1967. The couple returned to Yankton in 1968 where he joined his father, Joseph M. Hohn in his dental practice. Jim and Janell had one son, Jeff, who was born in Yankton in 1969.

He loved to cheer for his alma mater Creighton Blue Jays, the Wisconsin Badgers and of course, the Bucks, Gazelles and USD Coyotes.
